Mixed results for Caribbean players on day two

TUESDAY AUGUST 05, 2008, GROS-ISLET, Saint Lucia – As the rains
threaten to damper the spirits of the over 200 youth tennis players from the
Caribbean and beyond, there were some interesting results from game splayed
whenever the weather permitted.
In Boys’ 18 Singles, on Stadium Court, Darian King of Barbados defeated Luis
Fernando Ramirez 6-1 6-2, followed by a Girls’ 18 Singles clash in which
Fausthyara Pietersz of Aruba stopped Gizelle Clarke of Grenada 6-1 6-1.
Then in an all Saint Lucian affair, Kevin Deligny proved his superiority over many
other players with a 6-1 6-3 defeat of compatriot Dominic Lovell.
At one time, as the game headed to the expected result, Deligny prolong Lovell’s
agony with a series of lobs, forcing his opponent into making a series of unforced
errors.
On Court One in Boys’ 14 Singles action, Grenada’s Yannick James defeated
Mergregor Mongroo of Saint Lucia 6-1 6-3, Akeil Duke of Trinidad and Tobago lost
to Corey Wilson 6-1 6-3, and Saint Lucia’s Stacey Roheman defeated Naomi
Brathwaite of Grenada 6-0 6-2 in a Girls 14 Singles clash.
Brandon Burke of Jamaica continued to play competitively, defeating Eric Vehovec
of Canada 6-2 6-2 in a Boys’ 18 Singles clash, while Raye-Ann Sandy of Trinidad
and Tobago, stopped Sabrina Tahir of the USA 7-5 6-1 in Girls’ 18 Singles action.
Seanon Williams of Barbados was defeated by Ryan Cheung of the USA 6-3 5-7
6-2 in more Boys’ 18 Singles action.

In another Boys’ 18 Singles game, John Randolph Thornton of the USA defeated
Mykell Reifer of Barbados 6-2 6-1, and Blake Brookman of Australia defeated
Renaldo Gibson of Barbados 6-1 6-1 in more Boys’ 18 Singles action.
Both Thornton and Cheung are two of the top seeded players in the tournament,
and are expected to pose a serious challenge to all the other players in the
Boys’ 18 draw.
In Girls 14 Singles played following another rain delay, Daneya Charles of
Grenada defeated Keishorea Armstrong of Antigua 6-4 6-1, in a match full of
breath-taking rallies, laced with attacks to the net and some of the most
unbelievable shots for two players of that age.
Omodele Philips of Saint Lucia lost to Adrian de Silva of Trinidad and Tobago 6-3
7-5, and the talented Jualon Gregg also of Trinidad and Tobago defeated Eric
Mikhlin of the USA 6-2 6-1 IN Boys 14 Singles matches.
As the evening lights were turned on, Devard Wharton of Barbados stopped all
hopes of Jamaican Davian Burrell with a 6-1 6-0 lesson.
In an all Barbados affair as the evening progressed, Ancia Ifill lost to Ayssa
Fuentes 6-1 4-6 6-0, and Carlista Mohammad of Trinidad and Tobago lost to
Allison Falkin of the USA 6-3 6-3 in the last game of the day.
