First timer Mark ‘Uno’ Perry of the Upper

Demerara Barbel Club (UDBC) and sponsored

by Ragaman, etched his name into the Body

Building history books after being crowned the

first Mr. Hugh Ross Classic on Sunday evening

before a large and appreciative crowd at the

National Cultural Centre.

It was the inaugural Hugh Ross Classic Body Building and Fitness Competition

held in honor of Guyana’s most celebrated Body Builder, Hugh Ross.

Also sizzling on debut was female sprint queen Alicia Fortune representing Studio

2000. The senior Sportswoman of the year won the Ms. Body Fitness Open and

Ms. Body Building Open competitions, respectively.

Perry, who won the heavyweight category with his well-carved and defined body

ahead of the Interline Fitness (IF) duo of Oswin Jones and Al Dowding in that

order, stormed to victory in the pose down dual which featured the winners from

the 5 male categories.

For taking the overall title, he rode away with a Yamaha RX 100 Motor Cycle

sponsored by Mings Products and Services Limited and the HRC Committee, one

hamper containing supplements marketed by International Pharmaceutical

Agency and the huge Plus Energy trophy compliments of Banks DIH Limited.

Reigning Mr. Guyana Clint Duke of Total Package Gym in Linden upstaged Sylvon

Gardner of Buddy’s Gym to win the Welterweight category which turned out to

be the most competitive, attracting 9 athletes. Marlon Bennett of Interline

Fitness (IF) copped the 3rd place prize.

Following their individual posing routine which saw the competitors posing to

music, the athletes then went through the compulsory poses which entailed

them doing front double biceps, front lad spread, side chest, back double biceps,

back lad spread, side triceps and abdominals and thighs.

The judges then requested Duke, Gardner and Bennett step forward for further

comparisons as was the case with Alfred Jordon (IF), Alston Lancaster

(Winderoju) and Selwyn Grogan (IF).

Andel Cameron (IF) did not encounter much difficulty in taking the Light

Middleweight category over national sprint king Rawle Green of Studio 2000.

Adrian Charles (IF) took 3rd with Saens Sooklall of Winderoju bringing up the

rear.

Green’s 2nd place finish was a creditable place this being his first shot among

the seniors after claiming top honors at last year’s GABBFF Novices and

Intermediate championships.

Another Studio 2000 athlete, Royston Booker, was the lone competitor in the

Light Heavyweight division as was Middleweight Clyde Waldron of Interline

Fitness.

Despite being the lone persons, they were still required to go through the

compulsory posing routine.

Taking the runner up spot to Fortune in the Ms. Body Fitness Open was Melissa

Roberts (Studio) and UDBC’s Tameka Pellew. The other competitor in this

category which saw the ladies posing in a two-piece swim wear in round 1 and

one piece in round 2 was Leshawn Morgan.

Fortune was the lone female for the Ms. Body Building while Pellew was standing

alone for the Ms. Fitness Open. Both athletes entertained the crowd with

displays in their respective categories, Pellew displaying a high degree of

athleticism and acrobatics in her fitness display.

The five male category winners, Perry, Booker, Waldron, Cameron and Duke all

had an equal chance to challenge for the Mr. Hugh Ross overall title but it was

Perry who prevailed in the end.

The decision was a crowd pleasing one which underlined the fact that the 8-

member judge’s panel of Frank Tucker, George Marshall, Paula Alexander,

Rhonda Lewis, David Gomes, Dawn Barker, Franklin Brisport and Dr. Clem Mc

Ewan, did an excellent job for the entire evening.

Performing duties as chief statistician was Robyn Marshall-Lord, the panel

secretary was Fiona Harris while performing duties as the chief judge was Anya

Thomas.

Two guest posers were scheduled for the evening but former Mr. Guyana

Eustace Abrams was on stage and teamed up with special guest of honor Hugh

Ross to entertain the crowd.

The organisers apologized for the absence of the other guest poser, former CAC

Gold medalist and one of Guyana’s best, Horace Steele, who encountered some

hiccups with his flight from New York.

Honorable Minster of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony delivered the

feature remarks and declared the competition open.

Patrons who had the opportunity to sample products offered by Banks DIH (Plus

energy), De Sinco Trading (Axe & Sunsilk) and IPA (Supplements) were treated to

an entertaining evening of dance and fashion with the master of ceremonies

being popular local actor Howard Lorimer. Ross was his assistant for the night.

Kings Jewellery World and the Guyana Amateur Body Building and Fitness

Federation both made presentations to Ross in recognition of his achievements

regional and international.

The HRC Committee is expressing sincere thanks to the following sponsors from
