Hosts lose opening encounter

SATURDAY AUGUST 16 2008, MICOUD, Saint Lucia – Guyana defeated Saint

Lucia by three wickets in a tense low-scoring game at the Beauchamp Cricket

Ground, as the 2008 West Indies Senior Women Cricket Tournament bowled off.

Winning the toss and batting first, the hosts were bundled out for 124 off 35.3

overs, after losing three wickets to Erva Giddings very early in the inning.

Though there was a slight recovery, some injudicious stroke play, and senseless

running which caused a couple of run outs, eroded any chance of posting a really

challenging score.

Maria David top-scored with 42, Roylene Cooper and Pamela Alfred each

contributed 12, as the other batters failed to be patient and play sensibly, as

wickets fell at 07, 07, 08, 31, 48, 56, 92, 123, 123, and all out for 124.

Giddings finished with three for 16, Joan Vansertima three for 25, Yolande Parker

one for 11, and Davanie Sewnarine one for 20.

In reply, the Saint Lucians bowled a tight line although there were a few stray

wides, and backed up in the field. However with a less than challenging score to

defend at a required run rate of just over two runs an over, the hosts were

always up against it.

Verena Felicien took two for 28, Rudy Paul two for 15, Pamela Alfred one for 16,

and Maria David one for 24, as the Guyanese at times seem to be losing sight of

the target.

Wickets fell at 18, 38, 46, 52, 98, 99, and 108, with Yolande Parker top scoring

for the Guyanese with 42, Wazeeda Bacchus made 16, and Tremayne Smartt

chipped in with 09 as the Guyanese reached the 125 for seven off 38.3 overs.

Yolande Parker of Guyana was voted as the Player of the Match, while Maria

David received the runner-up nod.
