WEDNESDAY 28 MAY – ST JOHN’S, ANTIGUA – Ramnaresh Sarwan, who

captained the West Indies in the First Digicel Test at Sabina Park, says he is

looking forward to the team continuing to perform well, during the Digicel Test

Series against world champions Australia who are leading the three match series

1-0.

The West Indies played spirited and impressive cricket for most of the first four

days of the opening Digicel Test, but then capitulated on the final day, when

chasing 287 for victory to be all out for 191.

“I thought we played well throughout the Test match. The bowlers bowled well

especially in the second innings and they gave the batters an opportunity to

actually get a total that we could have batted and win the game, but

unfortunately, it didn’t happen that way. It’s really good for us. I hope we can

keep it up and get better in Second Test match,” the 27 year old right hander

said, as he reflected on the first four days of the Digicel Test in Jamaica which

ended on Monday last.

Sarwan was particularly impressed with the fielding, saying it was the best he

had seen the home side field in a long time.

“It was outstanding fielding. It is the best I’ve seen us field in the longest while,”

said Sarwan who stood in as captain for Chris Gayle who was forced to miss the

game with a groin injury, but is expected to be fit enough to play in the Second

Digicel Test which, will commence on Friday May 30 at the Sir Viv Richards Cricket

Ground in Antigua.

Sarwan said that he believes that playing positively against Australia is the key

to winning.

“I think we’ve got to be positive. We’ve got a lot to take from (the First Digicel

Test) match. We’ve got Fidel (Edwards) bowling very well and Shiv’s

(Chanderpaul) hundred. I thought he showed a lot of determination and it’s

important that we take a page out of the way he batted and we have to

continue to be positive,” Sarwan assessed.

Sarwan also said that fast bowler Jerome Taylor who also missed the First Digicel

Test due to injury would be fit and available for the Second Digicel Test.

The West Indies team had their first training session in Antigua on Wednesday

afternoon at the world famous Antigua Recreation Ground in St John’s.

Sarwan and several other players also attended the popular Digicel Scotiabank

Cricket Experience where they had fun playing against fans at various games.
