St. Mary’s College wins United for first time

The victorious St. Mary's College team

CASTRIES, Saint Lucia – St. Mary’s College won the 2008 United Insurance

Secondary Schools Cricket Tournament, for the first time, last Saturday at the

Mindoo Philip Park.

They defeated the Vieux-Fort Comprehensive Secondary School in the finals

played at the Mindoo Philip Park on Saturday 17 May 2008 before very empty

Stands.

However, despite the embarrassingly lack of public support, the game turned out

to be a very competitive one with St. Mary’s College emerging victorious by five

wickets.

Vieux Fort Comprehensive batted first and struggled, and was all out for 175 off

29.1 overs. No batsman dominated, but there were some useful contributions

from Sylvinus Charles 27, Kerwin Peter 23, Johaan Williams 21, and Dwayne

Williams 20 not out.

The SMC opening batsman is beaten by pace and swing

Doing the damage for the Samarians was Thomas Harris with three for 19,

Gideon Charles three for 58, and Suleiman Charlemagne two for 28.

Set 176 runs to win St. Mary’s College started cautiously against what was at

times hostile bowling, but the opening batsmen weathered the storm and set an

opening partnership of 44 before the first wicket fell.

In the space of two balls, St. Mary’s College lost two wickets, which gave the

southern lads a foothold in the doorway.

However an impressive fourth wicket partnership between captain Joachim

Robinson, the son of former national player Kent Crafton; and Thomas Harris

completely swung the game around for the Samarians thus assuring them of

victory.

This VFCSS batsman and his partner held up the Samarians in a frustrating last wicket partnership

Top scoring for St. Mary’s College was Thomas Harris 51, while Joachim Robinson

weighed in with an even half-century, with Kervin Peter’s three for 47 being the

best bowling figures for the losing finalists.
