Women cricketers shop at Courts
CASTRIES, SAINT LUCIA – In The decades of the 90s and 80s, Saint Lucia was
a regional force in women cricket, but due to a number fo factors, that dominance
have become cold as fires became extinguished.

President of the Saint Lucia National Cricket Association admitted just as much,
when he stated at the cheque presentation for the 2008 Women Cricket
Competition, “Over the past two years we have sort of gone off the boil.”
Efforts are being made to rekindle much interest in the sport, and with the
assistance of Courts Saint Lucia to the tune of EC$12,000.00, “that is now going
to be a reality.”

A Women Inter-district Twenty20 Cricket Competition will be held over the
coming weekends, and the SLNCA sees this as the new beginning for women
cricket in Saint Lucia.
Elizabeth Williams, Third Vice-president of the SLNCA with responsibility for
women cricket, told the gathering that a decline in women cricket had been
experienced in Saint Lucia, “and that had us losing our place at the top of
regional women cricket.”

She said that the SLNCA hopes that with Courts Saint Lucia coming on board to
assist, “the interest will be rekindle and women’s cricket will regain its place at
the top.”
The competition has been named the Courts Laurie Auguste Female Twenty 20
Cricket Tournament, and is in honour of one who gave much to the development
of women cricket.
“Mr. Laurie Auguste is one of the best administrators of women cricket in Saint
Lucia,” Williams added.
The tournament will be played over five weekends, and will see participation by
Soufriere, Anse-la-Raye, Dennery, Mabouya Valley, South Castries, Central
Castries, Babonneau, and Gros-Islet.
The tournament began on Sunday June 29th and concludes on July 20th 2008 at
