It's a nightmare for the teams by Robertson Henry

Saint Lucia’s # 9 Troy Prospere

seeks to get past Ashton Glenford of

St. Vincent and the Grenadines

KINGSTOWN
, St. Vincent & the Grenadines; Wednesday September 12th

2007 –
Going into tomorrow night’s third and final round of FIFA Under-23

Olympic Qualifying matches, the coaches of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint

Lucia, and Grenada have been forced to deal with what has become a

mathematical nightmare.

This is largely due to the goalless draw between St. Vincent and the Grenadines

and Saint Lucia, and the 3-nil defeat of Dominica by Grenada in last night’s

second round FIFA Under-23 Olympic Qualifying matches at the Victoria Park in

Kingstown.

Nightmare

Grenada’s # 18 Henson Cuffie and

Dominica’s # 10 Donnan Jervier in

a tussle for ball possession

Curlon Walcott put the Grenadians ahead in the 26th, and Wendell Rennie

added another in the 45th minute to send the Grenadians into the break

enjoying a 2-nil lead.

The Dominicans from that point onwards had no other choice but to avert a

disaster, while the Grenadians were only able to pepper the crowd with a series

of badly aimed shots at goal.

Then came the battle of the saints between St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and

Saint Lucia, and what a match it proved to be.

Both teams went at each other, but the Vincentians found the going tough as

they encountered a rapidly improving Saint Lucia team, that in the face of many

questionable calls, kept their composure.

A penalty not given in the 13th minute prevented the Saint Lucians from taking

the lead, but the many chances they created should have given them the three

pointed so badly needed.

Then when the Vincentians found themselves with shots at goal, goalkeeper

Randy Poleon stood his ground, affecting some of the best saves seen in the

tournament to date.

Both coaches admitted afterwards that the teams played their best, with all

being left to be played for in tomorrow night’s third and final round of matches

when Saint Lucia takes on Dominica, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines play

Grenada.

Head Coach of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Zoran Vrannes told the media

after the game, “The Saint Lucians in the game against Grenada and tonight

showed that they a very good team.”

He added that he wanted the victory but at the end of the day looking at the

overall game, “the result is correct, and hopefully we can win the game against

Grenada.”

The Brazilian born coach further pointed out, “both teams surprise me. It was a

very good game played at the highest quality, and such quality is what is

needed to play at the highest level.”

His counterpart the Saint Lucia Head Coach Denis Lukens told the media, “I

know St. Vincent would be very good. They have some talented strikers; guys

who are clever with the ball, and they are well coached.”

He went on to state that “we prepared for this game and we saw what they did

on Sunday night so we prepared for that.”

The American-born Lukens gave much credit to his players, stating, “My players

played very, very well. They stepped up and played ninety minutes hard, and I

think it is a fair result. Neither one of us seem to have the better of each other.”

Saint Lucia need to keep on praying for only a draw in the St. Vincent and the

Grenadines versus Grenada game, and a defeat of Dominica by Saint Lucia will

surely send the Saint Lucians into the next round of matches.
