Two down, two to go in this year’s Blackheart
SUNDAY MAY 25, 2008, Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia - Defending champions
Dennery and Canaries, booked places in the semi-finals of the 2008 I.G.Y.
Rodney Bay Marina / Guinness-sponsored Blackheart/Kashif and Shanghai
Knockout Football Tournament.
This followed victories in quarterfinal action at the Beausejour Cricket Ground,
against Mon Repos and Southeast Castries, respectively at the Beausejour
Cricket Ground.
In the opening match of the evening Canaries ended Mon Repos advance with
what turned out in the end to be an easy 5-2 victory.
Phillip Tisson slammed home a brace in the 12th and 42nd minutes, with Chris
Alexander adding two of his own in the 80th and 90th minutes, and goal from
the boots of Cantius James in the 45th minute.
For Mon Repos, who lost their leading player Jason ‘turtle’ Constantine in the
early stages of the game with a severe shoulder injury, gave their opponents a
scare; at one stage in the encounter leading 2-1.
Mon Repos’s goals came from Lewin Hippolyte in the 29th minute and Evanus
Emmanuel in the 36th, but in the end, the more aggressive Canaries team
proved to be too much.
In the night’s second game, defending champions Dennery had a two-nil win
over Southeast Castries. The goals came from Aaron Flavien in the 65th, and
Levi Gilbert in the 89th minute from a defender’s error, giving Dennery a place in
the semi-finals.
It was a lacklustre performance by the defending champions against a very well
organised and well-coached Southeast Castries team, by Trevor “fifa” Henry.
The other two-quarter finals in the 2008 Blackheart/Kashif and Shanghai
Knockout Football Tournament take place on Wednesday evening at the
Beausejour Cricket Ground with the other quarterfinal matches.
The Castries All Stars takes on Vieux-Fort South from 6.00 p.m., in a game the
result of which can go either way, and in the mouth-watering clash of the
tournament to date at 8.00 p.m., two-time champions Mabouya Valley and Vieux-
Fort North do battle.
Many are looking forward to see how the free flowing Mabouya Valley team will
contain Sheldon Emmanuel who so far is the outstanding player in the 2008
tournament.
