Grenada one of firm favourites

WEDNESDAY JULY 09, 2008, GROS-ISLET, Saint Lucia – Grenada put themselves

in a  strong position to win the OECS Under-23 Netball title for just the second

time in the tournament’s history, when they stopped one of the favourites St.

Kitts with a 64 – 49 defeat this morning.

The two teams clash this morning at the Beausejour Indoor Facility on day four

of the 2008 OECS Under-23 Netball Tournament.

Having been beaten last evening by hosts Saint Lucia, the Kittitians were hell

bent on making someone pay; but the spice girls had other ideas, pouring

sufficient water in the sugar barrel to send the girls from Sugar City on the verge

of being totally out of contention.

The Grenadians girls came out with guns blazing, leading in all quarters 18 – 13,

34 – 27, 51 – 42, and finally 64 – 49.

For Grenada,Lottysha Cato scored 52 out of 62 attempts, Ixtty Joseph 4 out of

6, and Iana Joseph 8 out of 14.

For St. Kitts, the one-time favourites in the 2008 OECS Under-23 Netball

Tournament, Ronelle Morton scored 44 out of her 52 attempts, Tenelle Lapsey

scored 2 of 2, and Michelle Liburd was successful in scoring 3 of her 6 attempts.

Then St Vincent and the Grenadines blew Anguilla away 81 – 34, the quarter

scores being9 – 20, 18 – 41, 29 – 59, and81 – 34; all in favour of the

Vincentians.

Shellisha Davis scored 29 of 36 attempts taken, Leeana Lewis 48 of 53, and

Tamara Samuel 4 out of her 5 attempts at the net.

For Anguilla, Natasha Proctor scored 30 out of her 37 attempts; 100-percent

success for Tishana DePass and Shanique Roberts, each of them scoring 2 out of

attempts.

Earlier, in the first game of the morning, leading throughout in all quarters 13

– 11, 32 – 17, 47 – 25, and finally 62 – 31, Nevis handed Antigua another defeat

as the action roared on.

For the Nevisians, Shantell Williams scored 37 of 48 attempts, and Shanyse

Bartlette 25 out of her 30 attempts.

In the Antiguan effort, Jamila Fitz scored 21 out of 25 attempts, and Ariel

Alexander 10 of 17 attempts.

This evening the giants will clash, as Grenada and hosts nation Saint Lucia with

eight points out of four games each, will meet in what could be the tournament

decider.

Again, there are further twists, as the Vincentians can defeat both teams

tomorrow, and force a sharing of the 2008 OECS Under-23 Netball title, by two

or three nations. (Robertson S. Henry)
