In 2000, the People’s Republic on China Taiwan spent a few million dollars for
the construction of the National Tennis Centre, situated at Villa in St. Vincent
and
the Grenadines.
Having been home to the national tennis developmental programme, the
National Tennis Centre is now a hive of activity as the inaugural Digicel ITF Junior
Tennis Tournament is taking place.
However the Taiwanese Ambassador to the island of St. Vincent and the
Grenadines His Excellency Jack Cheng, spoke of the National Tennis Centre
being not just the best in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, “but one of the best
in this region.”
He was addressing the Official Opening of the inaugural Digicel ITF Junior Tennis
Tournament, in which 149 participants from twenty-three countries had
registered.
The Taiwanese Ambassador mentioned the period of seven years have elapsed
since the construction of the facility, “and that is has been well maintained by
the SVG Tennis Association.”
The Taiwanese diplomat had high praise for the efforts of the Vincentian tennis
officials for their efforts in developing and promoting the sport of tennis in the
country.
Moreover the opportunities presented to the children of parents irrespective of
societal status, or otherwise to take up the sport of tennis is and has been one
of the best programmes in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
So pleased was the Taiwanese Embassy with the response to the tournament,
that Ambassador Cheng announced the Taiwanese Embassy was joining the
principal sponsor and that a contribution of $5,000.00 was being made to the
tournament.
